What is prayer?

I come to you, O God, because you wait for me.
With each new day you listen for my voice and
come to share in all my searchings.
You are the one in whom I trust.

Prayer is being attentive to God: communicating with the One who is
loving and gracious, knowing that we can feel free enough to openly
share all of our hopes, dreams, fears, worries, and frustrations.
We can share concerns about the people in our lives, and about our world.
We can thank God for all the goodness and mercy that has been shown to us
in our lives.

Communicating however, is a two-way street.
We also need to learn to become quiet and listen to the One
who prays in us.

To pray is to descend with the mind into the heart,
and there to stand before the face of the Lord,
ever-present, all-seeing, within you.
– Theophan the Recluse.

Out of the silence God speaks to us in the quiet of our being.
