What wondrous love is this, O my soul?

God,

We do not always understand your kindness:
we look for a rescuer and find instead a friend;
we wait for solutions, but instead are given strength.

We do not always understand your forgiveness:
we look for assurance, and find instead challenge;
we wait for inward peace,
and then are led to risk even more.

You, Lord, judge in favour of the oppressed.
You uphold the rights of the poor.
You are with the sufferer.
Be merciful with us when we turn our backs
on the afflicted.
Be merciful with us when we turn our backs
on our own pain.
Be merciful with us when we try too hard
to eliminate suffering without dealing with its causes.

Our life is like grass,
like a wild flower:
so fragile, so vulnerable
to the winds of our times.
We are made of dust.
And yet you honour us with your love,
with your presence amidst limitation,
with your unconditional acceptance of our reality.
Truly you are a Sovereign who rules over all,
not through the force of might,
but out of the throne of the heart.
